DESIGN STUDIO 3 2013/14 - The Arcola
REFLECTING FROM SITE
VISIT 7/10/13
Dear all,
Many thanks to Ruth Tosha Mulandi at the Arcola for the information and tour!
A lot of information was collected and observed - now
put together all the info – it may help to group the various bits of research
and mapping – to make more sense of what you have (then this info may overlap
and merge into conceptual ideas etc):
- the research, Arcola, surrounding area, the history and
the current Arcola, the green and sustainable aspect, the three areas they
particularly value: sustainability/community engagement/artistic programme.
Within this, the ‘visitor experience’ is important. Add sketches, drawings, photos. You can also use photos to trace over.. starting ideas.
Now you will start to produce the technical drawings, that you will
then work on for your design proposals. Richard has kindly worked out the
drawings and these will be used by all. You need to produce one existing set and then work on developing another
set with your design proposals. You then have 'the existing and the proposed
set'. You will work on this and Paul will help you convert any files to the
software you are using etc in your Communication module. Some of you have started with Vectorworks, Paul
will work with Autocad, and this will be beneficial for you.
Richard gave some students drawings on USBs – please
share these asap. I will upload on Studynet.
Thursday 10/10:
Show your Spatial Analysis work to date.
Monday 14/10:
Present site mapping and start to talk about ideas you may want to develop.
Starting the design: You will mainly be working on the public areas of the Arcola building; the
entrance, foyer, bar/café and surrounding corridors/stairs. The theme is identity and the mapping you carry out in
the area and inside the building should start to give clues and ideas for you
to start from. Do start initial ideas, even if these are vague for now. We will
discuss more Thu/Mon of course, but you need to have work ongoing all the time
from now. Produce the drawings asap,
so you have that in place.
Don’t forget Silvio’s detailing
task (Technology module only).
See you Thursday.
