Introduction
This Design
Studio module sets the framework for enabling students to develop inventive and
appropriate approaches to the detailed reworking and transformation of existing
built spaces at the 1:1 scale. This work will be supported by the parallel
technology module Detail and by the Communications module Digital Skills 2. Through
the supporting modules, students will engage very specifically with materials
and construction, they will be introduced to concerns relating to
sustainability, maintenance and resource-effectiveness, so as to examine the
possibilities and limitations of recycling and re-use. Source: DMD

Looking back all I did was look away
Next time is the best time we all know
But if there is no next time where to go? [ ]
Ooh show me”
Re-Make/Re-Model
Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music (1972)
Client/Site: Arcola, 24 Ashwin Street, London E8 3DL
This
project is primarily concerned with the theme of identity in interior architecture, investigating space/place,
sustainability and heritage, with a performative aspect, for example, using
experimental research and mapping methodologies to observe and understand space.
A new use or insertion of detailed design will be proposed, closely linking to
the site and client (Arcola), research and development throughout the project.
With
emphasis on site and narrative, we will investigate transformation and change
of use within existing spaces. This module will connect closely with Technology
2: Detail and Communication 3: Digital Skills and the C&CS module.
You
will start working on concept ideas and proposals for one area as assigned by
the client and then, link these design solutions with a linked
design/installation narrating the history of Arcola and its place in the
community.
For
the duration of this project, you will further develop your design skills,
through drawing, formulating concepts and proposals, liaising with clients
and/or real sites, starting with the notion of place. You will explore and test ideas through a series of research
activities and learn to take risks in your design thinking and analysis,
starting to develop an individual approach to your design learning.
As
always, a prerequisite for the module is full engagement in all activities and
attention to detail and instruction. You will become fully immersed in the
project and treat the assignment as a ‘real situation’, and show commitment to
study and adhere to deadlines.
